Post op fibrosis: why it happens, what helps, and what to avoid

Fibrosis sounds scary, but it is simply your body laying down new collagen as it repairs. After liposuction and other body contouring, you may feel ropey, firm, or bumpy spots under the skin. Some are tender. Some are just odd. Here is how we approach it with patience, gentleness, and a plan that respects your surgeon’s timeline.
What is happening under the skin
During healing, your body goes through many changes. Fluid can collect in certain areas. Movement patterns change because you are sore. All of that can make spots feel thick or stuck. This is common and the thing to remember is that as your body is healing, it changes almost daily.
How gentle MLD helps
MLD supports fluid movement and comfort. When tissues feel less tight, you can move more naturally, which also helps. I work lightly along mapped pathways and avoid any aggressive pushing or digging. Your lymph system prefers a calm request over a command.
Smart home care
• Short walks and light range of motion to keep things from stiffening.
• Consistent garment wear if your surgeon recommends it.
• Simple skin care to keep the area comfortable.
• Avoid intense self massage unless your surgeon specifically okays it. Overworking can make tender tissues more reactive.
When to talk to your surgeon
If you notice new heat, redness, fever, sharp pain, or a sudden change in shape, contact your surgeon right away. They may want to check for a seroma, hematoma, or other issue that needs medical attention.
Progress you can feel
Most people report that areas feel softer and more comfortable over several sessions. Clothes feel nicer. Sleep is easier. Mornings are calmer. We celebrate those small wins because they add up.
